The M1536dnf is a capable MFP, but it doesn't earn quite the glowing recommendation it would get if it offered faster speed, options for additional paper handling, or both. Depending on how demanding you are, you may or may not consider it suitable for, say, PowerPoint handouts going to clients who you want to impress with a sense of your professionalism. Graphics output is a match for the vast majority of mono laser MFPs, which makes it good enough for almost any internal business need. Photos are also in the top tier for the category, but that's not saying a lot, since it basically translates to being equivalent to black and white newspaper photos-good enough to print recognizable photos from Web pages and suitable for client or company newsletters. The text is in the top tier for mono laser MFPs, which means you shouldn't have any complaints about it even if you're a nit-picking perfectionist.
The M1536's output quality is better than par overall. Note that HP rates the M1536dnf at 26 ppm, which should be close to the speed you'll see when printing text files without graphics or photos. Even HP's own, less expensive, LaserJet Pro M1212nf MFP ($199 direct, 3.5 stars) was faster, at 11.3 ppm.

It came in on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective 7.5 pages per minute (ppm).Īs one point of reference, the similarly priced Editors' Choice Canon imageClass MF4570dn ($299 direct, 4 stars) scored 12.3 ppm, making it the fastest in this category.

For my tests, I connected the printer to a network and ran the tests from a Windows Vista system. Note too that like most MFPs in this category, the M1536dnf is a little large to share a desk with, at 14.7 by 17.4 by 13.5 inches (HWD), but small enough so that finding room for it shouldn't be much of a problem even if space is tight.Įxcept for the ePrint feature, which requires going to the ePrint Web site, setup is standard fare. If you need more input capacity, however, HP doesn't offer any additional trays. The 250-sheet main tray and 10-sheet multipurpose tray, along with a duplexer for printing on both sides of the page, should be enough for most micro and home offices with light- to medium-duty printing needs.
The M1536dnf's paper handling manages to be both ample and disappointingly limited. In some cases, this ability alone will make the M1536dnf worth getting. Simply send a file as an e-mail attachment.
